What is Digital Post

Digital Post is your mailbox on the Internet. Here you can send and receive emails from the public authorities. Digital Post is as safe as Internet banking – nobody else can see your emails.

With Digital Post you can:

  • Send and receive secure free e-mails from the public authorities.
  • Save your emails from the public authorities, so that you can easily find them again.
  • Receive notifications in your private email when there are new messages in the digital mailbox.
  • See all your eBoks letters if you already signed up to e-Boks.

If you do not use Digital Post or some other secure mail, and you include sensitive personal information in your e-mail, the municipality cannot respond to your request electronically.

How to sign up for Digital Post

Go to lifeindenmark.dk and follow the instructions. You can sign up using the green box.

Remember that:

  • If you already have a digital mailbox, you can check where you have chosen to receive mail from. Log in to your digital mailbox and click on the tab "Registrations". Then you will get a list of all the authorities and companies that you receive digital mail from.

There are a number of real advantages to a digital mailbox. It is fast, secure and easy.

Your advantages with Digital Post

  • When you send an e-mail via your digital mailbox, you send it securely. This means that there is nobody other than you and the recipient who can open and read your correspondence with us. Your digital mailbox is connected to your social security number and protected by your NemID.
  • Your digital mailbox will follow you, even if you change your address or change your e-mail.
  • Your post is automatically saved and securely stored in your digital mailbox. You always have your correspondence with the public with you as long as you have your NemID with you.
  • You can access your digital mailbox on any computer.
  • Both you and the municipality save the cost of postage and paper.

The municipality's advantages with Digital Post

  • As a public authority we can only send sensitive personal or confidential information through a secure channel: Digital Post is secure.
  • Aarhus Municipality can save a lot of money by sending and receiving mail electronically, and together we can save a lot of paper and thus do something good for the environment.
  • We also save working hours by managing our workflows electronically.

You can apply for an exemption if you cannot use Digital Post.

All citizens in Denmark must have a digital mailbox on www.borger.dk to communicate with the public sector.

You can apply for an exemption if you cannot use Digital Post.

However, you must meet at least one of the following criteria for exemption:

  • You have left Denmark permanently
  • You are no longer registered with residence or place of residence in Denmark
  • You have practical difficulties in obtaining the public digital signature (NemID)
  • You have a physical or mental disability that prevents you from using Digital Post.
  • Your Danish skills are not enough to use Digital Post
  • You are living in an area where there is no opportunity to establish internet connection (min. 512 kbit / s downstream speed)
  • You do not have access to a computer in your home or place of residence

Applications to be exempted from Digital Post must be made in person at Citizens Services.

You can also deliver the completed waiver form at your local library. You can print and complete the form from home.

You must remember credentials. If you need dispensation from Digital Post, it is enough to bring fx your health card. If you want to give another person access to read your Digital Post, you must bring photo identification in the form of a valid passport or driving license. Remember the cpr-number of the person you want to give access to.

Do you need help?

You can get help to order or use NemID, Digital Post and other public self service solutions at The Digital Hotline +45 70 20 00 00

You can give reading acces to another person who can help you with your Digital Post.

You can give fx a family member access to read your post in Digital Post. This can be a good solution for fx. spouses or children who do not see the physical mail daily but can help you to read and manage your mail. This may also be a good solution for parents who want to help their young children to a good start communicating with the public sector.

The person with the reading access can be notified by SMS or email when there is new mail in Digital Post. At the same time the letters are gathered in one place, and it is easy to find the item again. Therefore, in some cases, a reading access can be a better option than being exempted from receiving digital post.

You must use the CPR number of the person you want to give reading access to your Digital Post.

You can give reading access to another person via Digital Post on Borger.dk. You can also get help to create the reading access in person at Citizens' Services or at the local library. However, you must remember to bring photo identification. If you cannot show up in person at the Citizens' Services, you can give power of attorney to a relative who can show up at the Citizens' Services for you.

Remember that you are still responsible for your mail, even if you give reading access to another person.
