Change of general practitioner (family doctor)
General Practitioners (GP) in Denmark either have their own medical practice or share a practice with other GPs. You can choose any GP or shared medical practice open to new patients.
The Danish word for a Generel Practitioner is "Praktiserende læge".
Find a new GP open to new patients
At sundhed.dk you can find the GPs that are open to new patients.
Choose “Behandlere” and next “Praktiserende læge”. Choose “Århus” to get a list of all the GPs in Aarhus Municipality. If the text says “Åben for tilgang” the GP is open to receive new patients.

How do I choose another GP?
You change your GP using a self service solution online. You log on using your NemID.
If you have children, you can change their GP online as well until they are 15 years old.
If you do not have NemID, Citizen Service (Borgerservice) will help you with your change of GP.
Choice of GP when moving
When you change your address you can either keep your current GP or choose a new GP open to take in new patients.
What does it cost to change my GP?
It is free of charge to change your GP, if:
- Your current GP closes his or her medical practice
- The medical practice of your current GP is split into independent medical practices.
- You change your GP because your changing your address.
- You turn 15 and wish to change your GP.
If none of the above applies you must pay 210 kr. (2021) to change your GP.
How do I change my GP when I turn 15?
When your reach the age of 15 you can choose another GP than the one chosen by your parent(s).
It is free of charge to choose another GP during the month in which you turn 15 and in the following month. Hereafter, it costs 210kr (2021)
You need a NemID to change your doctor online.
This also applies when you turn 15:
- Your parent(s) can no longer change your GP online. If you wish to have the help of your parent(s) to change your GP, they must book an appointment with Citizen Service and show valid ID as well as a power of attorney signed by you.
